1 ECE2280 Homework #2 Spring 2010 1. (a) Explain how an amplifier works in your own words. (b) Explain in your own words what R i is. (c) Explain in your own words what R o is. (d) Describe the ideal characteristics for an amplifier (i.e. ideal value for R i , R o , A vo ) (e) Describe the characteristics for a buffer amplifier . (f) Describe Gain-Bandwidth Product in your own words. 2. Use the circuit below to find the overall voltage gain v L /v s . 3. Design an amplifier that provides 0.5W of signal power to a 100 Ω load resistance. The signal source provides a 30mV rms signal and has a resistance of 0.5M Ω . Three types of voltage-amplifier stages are available: (a) A high-input resistance type with R i =1M Ω , A vo =10, and R o =10k Ω . (b) A high-gain type with R i =10k Ω , A vo =100, and R o =1k Ω . (c) A low-output-resistance type with R i =10k Ω , A vo =1, and R o =20 Ω . Design a suitable amplifier using a combination of these stages. Your design should utilize the minimum number of stages and should ensure that the signal level is not reduced below 10mV at any point in the amplifier chain.
