CHEM 3221 Organic Chemistry I Pre-lab Lecture UH DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Distillation (Macroscale) Distillation : A separation technique based on differences in boiling points. Evaporation : A process in which molecules in a liquid state gain sufFcient energy to enter the gaseous state. Vapor Pressure : The pressure exerted by a vapor in equilibrium with its liquid state. Vapor pressure is dependent on temperature and nature of the substance. Boiling Point : The temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals to the external pressure applied (normally atmospheric pressure) to the surface of the liquid. Review of Terms
