18.11. The 1 st Law: Specific cases 1. Adiabatic processes. An adiabatic process occurs in an insulated system so that no transfer of thermal energy occurs between the system and its environment. Putting Q=0 in the first law, 2. Constant-volume processes. If the volume of a gas is held constant, so that system can do no work . Putting W=0 in the first law , 3. Cyclical processes. After certain heat and work the system is restored to its initial state. Internal energy is not changed
