Biol 315 Lecture 27 Review Checklist Describe the two basic components of the digestive system = the  alimentary canal (gut tube)  and the  accessory digestive organs . Know the basic activities (functions) that the digestive system performs.  Discuss the differences (locations) between  intrinsic  and  extrinsic glands   associated with the digestive system.  Know the microanatomy (the layers in the wall) of the alimentary canal.  [Editor’s note: doing a rough sketch of this won’t hurt!]. What are the  functions of the two muscle layers ( muscularis mucosae  and  muscularis   externa )? Where are the autonomic nerve plexuses located?  What is the  enteric nervous system Be able to give a simple example  of how this system works – e.g., let’s say  you have finished a nice big meal and the mass of partially digested food  has made its way into your small intestine – causing the wall of the intestine
