Name: Shiqi Li SID: 21719942 Course: Engineering 10- MSE Module B Batteries and Fuel Cells Section: Wed Batteries for Digital Camera The device I will analyze in this paper is a digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR camera). It is a PENTAX K-x. The particular characteristics of digital cameras affect the usage of the batteries. The amount of power required from the batteries can change due to different functions of the camera one is using, even in one shot, such as zoom, flash, record and LCD screen. Moreover, digital cameras are power consuming devices. The batteries have to provide power for the LCD screen, CCD (Charge-Coupled Device, which is a high-speed semiconductor used in the image detecting system in digital cameras.), storage system and sometimes flash light. As a result, powerful batteries are suitable for devices like digital cameras. Also, the life of the batteries when used should be considered, because you do not want to change the batteries very frequently while using the camera. According to the User Guide of this camera, it can use three kinds of batteries: lithium, nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and alkaline. Each battery type has its own advantages and disadvantages. The batteries I am using now for the digital camera are lithium AA batteries. They are non-rechargeable and expensive. However they are proven to be the “world’s longest lasting AA batteries in high tech devices.” 1 It will last up to almost eight times longer than the normal lithium batteries and can operate in a wide range of temperature: from -40 to 140 . In order to minimizing the cost of the 1 http://www.energizer.com/products/lithium-batteries/lithium/Pages/lithium-batteries.aspx The ofFcial site of energizer.

batteries, I decide to replace the lithium batteries with nickel metal hydride (NiMH) AA batteries, which are rechargeable and cheaper. Both of the batteries are AA size. The lithium battery can offer an open circuit voltage of 1.8 Volts
