Unformatted text preview: Lab 7 C.J. Gorrell Transients of RC circuits ENME350 0102 3/7/10 I. Objective – Design an RC circuit and observe the charging and discharging of a capacitor, while using an oscilloscope to estimate the time constant of an RC circuit. II. Instruments Used A. Power Supply B. Function Generator C. Oscilloscope D. Multimeter E. Stopwatch III. Parts Needed A. Breadboard B. Switch C. 16k, 270k, 1M ohm resistors D. 1uF, 10uF capacitors IV. Charging an RC circuit with a DC source A. Experimental Setup: The RC circuit below was used to observe the charging of a capacitor. A multimeter and stopwatch was used to observe the voltage of the capacitor over time, from 0V at t=0 to the voltage at steady state. Picture 1 B. C. D. Data: Calculations: AnalysisVoltage of the Capacitor (volts) Time (seconds) 0 2 4 6 8 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 80 0 V. Discharging a Capacitor in an RC Circuit A. Experimental Setup: Using the circuit above, the Capacitor is discharged through the resistor, and using a multimeter and stopwatch, the voltage of the capacitor over time is observed from steady state voltage at t=0, to V=0. B. Data: Time (seconds) 0 2 4 6 8 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 80 Voltage of Capacitor (Volts) C. D. VI. Calculations: Analysis- RC transients A. Experimental Setup: Using the RC circuit before with R=270k ohm and R=16k ohm, and C= 10uF, the voltage across the capacitor during charging and discharging, and the voltage across the power supply were observed through the oscilloscope. Data: C. Calculations: D. Analysis- B. VII. RC transients with a Function Generator A. Experimental Setup: The power supply was replaced from the previous experiment with a function generator, and the voltage across both the capacitor and function generator over time were observed using the oscilloscope. The voltage of the resistor was also determined using the KVL and the voltages of the function generator and the capacitor. B. Data: C. Calculations: D. Analysis- VIII. Conclusion- ...
