ASTRONOMY 101 Spring Semester 2008 Section 002 11:00-12:15 Tues.-Thurs.: Room 215 Phillips Hall Prof. Christiansen Office: Room 286 Phillips Hall Office Hours: 2:30-4:30 PM Thursday or by Appointment TEXT: UNIVERSE: Stars and Galaxies,” by Freedman, Roger and Kaufmann, William. We will try to cover an average of about 2 chapters in the text per week. We are going to generally follow the ordering of material used in the text. I think you will be VASTLY more effective in your studies of astronomy if you consistently read ahead of the lectures. Note: my lectures are designed to give you highlights and points of emphasis. You will NOT be held responsible for ALL the material in the text but primarily for material covered in the lectures. Lecture notes, primarily in the form of power point presentations will be available on UNC’s Blackboard System for this course. EXAMS: There will be 3 exams during the term and a final exam. The final will carry double the weight of the other 3 exams. One third of the material in the final exam will be on readings and lectures
