* BICD 100 – Genetics TA: Kathleen Section Handout #5 (Week 7)                  Office Hours:  F 9-10am,  CLICS study tables, first floor Extra Office Hours this week!  (Friday OH canceled) Wed (today): 10-11am, CLICS first floor tables            1:30-2:30pm CLICS first floor tables (I can stay longer if necessary) Thurs (tomorrow): 6-6:30pm in front of York 2722 for your last minute questions Lecture summary Psuedoautosomal region : regions on the X and Y chromosomes that carry similar genes to allow for the  pairing up of homologous chromosomes o For the Y chromosome, there aren’t a lot of genes, and most of the genes that are on there  code for male characteristics Mullerian duct : eventually turns into the uterine tube for females Wolfian duct : eventually turns into the vas deferens for males Sex-Determining Gene (SRY):  starts stimulating at 5-6 weeks in pregnancy; the presence of this gene gives  the stimulation to create a male, otherwise the fetus will “default” to become a female o Presence of SRY gene   create testes   testes produce testosterone   cells receive the  signals   influences which genes turn on and off o Absence of SRY gene   Wolfian duct dies without the stimulation of testosterone and  Mullerian duct becomes the uterine tube Mullerian Inhibiting Substance : created by males to “kill off” the Mullerian tube Androgen-Insensitivity Syndrome : problem comes when there are no functional testosterone receptors,  despite producing testosterone. Essentially, the testosterone has nowhere to go! Nature will “default” the  embryo to form the female pathway
