Mary Wright M4wright@ucsd.edu OH Friday 1:00-2:00 in CLICS Week 9: Handout 8, Discussion 8 Codominance Blood Groups -Multiple Alleles Also known as an Allelic Series An allelic series occurs when there are more than 2 alleles in a population Inheritance is similar to when there are only 2 alleles, but there are now more possible genotypes and phenotypes Ex) ABO blood group system -ABO Blood Group System In this system, there are 3 alleles: A, B, O o A and B are dominant over O o Neither A nor B is dominant over the other, but rather they exhibit codominance This means that the phenotype which is exhibited is not in between A and B, but rather it shows the traits of both alleles If there are 3 alleles, how many possible genotypes are there? 6 If there are 3 alleles, how many possible phenotypes are there? 4 It was found that the blood group is determined by proteins on the surface of the red blood cell So what does it actually mean to have A, B, AB, or O phenotype? o A and B are antigens on the surface of the red blood cell o The immune system produces antibodies against antigens An individual will have antibodies against any non-self materials (or antigens) If an AA individual has A antigens on the surface of its red blood cells, then it will produce anti-B antibodies (or just B-antibodies) If a BB individual has B antigens on the surface of its red blood cells, then it will produce anti-A antibodies (or just A-antibodies) If an AB individual has A and B antigens on the surface of its red blood cells,
