BENG 109 Homework #4: Chapters 8 & 11 1. In an attempt to push a child toward the table you exert a force, F= 68.7 N i , on a highchair as shown. Given: the friction force (horizontal component of the reaction force) at point a = -43.8 N i the coefficient of static friction between the chair and the floor is 0.4 at points a & b the mass of the child and chair together is 40 kg h = 1.2 m w = 0.4 m d = 0.175 m Determine if the applied force is large enough to cause the chair to slide. 2. Refer to problem #4.38 (page 178) but assume that the coefficient of friction between the ladder and ice is 0.05 and the angle that the lower surface makes with the horizontal is 20 o (not 10 o as shown in the figure). What is P when motion is impending? 3. What is the minimum value of the mass of block B required to maintain equilibrium? The weight of block A is 1500 N and the coefficient of friction between block A and the incline is 0.1. The coefficient of friction between block B and the ground is 0.24.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
