10/30 Self, Emotion, and Temperament and Personality Self and Personality What is Personality? -combination of attributes, motives, values, and behaviors unique to each individual -continuous vs. discontinuous Self-concept: “What I am” -I am not smart Self-esteem: “How good I am” -I’m worthless, I have nothing to offer Theories of Personality Development Psychoanalytic Theory: -Biological and formed by age 5 -Continuous Trait Theory: -Personality is a set of traits -Big Five: openness to experience, conscientiousness,extraversion,  agreeableness, neuroticism -Continuous Social Learning Theory:  -Personality traits change if their environments change -Discontinuous The Infant Sense of Self: -Develops by 2-3 months -Self-recognition: around 18 months can recognize self in mirror
