Unformatted text preview: Periodic Properties of the Elements • Dmitire Menedelevve and Lothar Meyer independently come up with the same idea of how elements should be grouped • Menedelevve predicted the existence of germanium EFFECTIVE NUCLEAR CHRAGE • Zeff=Z-S o Z=total e- o S(screening constant)=Core c- • Positive charge experienced by an electron. • Shielding effect of negatively charged electrons prevents higher orbital electrons from experiencing the nuclear charge of the core electrons . • Larger electron cores are less able to screen the outer electrons from the nucleus charge • Holding valence electrons is the attraction to the nucleus • INCREASE IN Zeff causes the NUCLEUS to draw the ELECTRONS IN CLOSER SIZE OF ATOMS / ATOM IC RAD IUS • Bonding atomic radius is ½ of the distance between coventaly bonding nuclei • IN PERIOD atomic radius decreases as you go across a period o Due to Increase in effective nuclear charge • IN FAMILY atomic radius decreases as you go Down the family • Increase in E- means increase in size •...
