Unformatted text preview: ENV S 173 Lecture 11-6 The New Deal and the Environment Black Tuesday- Stock market crash of 1929, October 29 1929 the day the stock market crashed on Wall Street, market lost 40% of its value in a 3 week period, 80% from ????-????, Great Depression- 60% of unemployment in like Cleveland, Franklin Roosevelt- Relieve, reform, and recovery, this is what he brought about, re-ushered a lot of the progressive ideals, Civilian Conservation- Roosevelt asked congress to establish this, Corps (CCC)- To get people back to work, to put young men back to work, they went out and recruited people, work in forestry, soil, building trades, improving national parks, work in national parks and forests, Dust Bowl- High southern great plains, area of little rain fall, 10-20 inches of rain per year, then came the drought in the late 20’s, over cultivation, black blizzards (high winds etc.), dust bowl came and ravaged the great plains Biodiversity- Ended this biodiversity with the ONE crop of WHEAT boom,...
