ENV S 173 Midterm Outline Utilitarian Conservation -Utilitarian conservation stressed the importance of utility over the beauty of land in the Americas. -From Europe in the 1700s came the period of the Enlightenment. -This was also referred to as the Age of Reason. -Our own U.S. constitution is a good example of from this period of time. -During this time, all things were explain through science and the idea of trial and error. -Scientists during the Enlightenment believed that humans could figure things out. -Isaac Newton was the father of the Enlightenment science. -He founded physics, mechanics, calculus, and defined gravitational force/ -Benjamin Franklin was a follower of Newton -During this period, new Universities started to emerge in the study of science, physics, chemistry, hydraulics, and more. -Students who graduated from these Universities started to get involved with government and evolved it into a more science based government. -With the use of technology, people were able to produce tremendous amounts of goods that could be sold to a mass audience, during what was the Industrial Revolution.
