BUSINESS WRITING BASICS Due: In lab week of January 25 Objective: To review common business writing errors; to modify tone or delivery of messages for more effective business writing. Purpose: To inform, to persuade Format: Handwritten or typed on homework sheet Audience: Various Audiences SafeAssign: No DIRECTIONS: Read the examples for clarification on each issue and then re-write the sentences or phrases to correct the error. Sender or I/We focus vs. Audience or You Focus Ex.: Our warranty becomes effective only when we receive an owner’s registration. Your warranty begins working for you as soon as you return your owner’s registration. I have scheduled your vacation to begin May 1. I give my permission for you to attend the two-day workshop. We shipped your order by UPS, and we are sure it will arrive in time for the sales promotion on January 15. We will reimburse you for all travel expenses. We are pleased to announce that we have selected you to join our trainee program. Negative vs. Positive Language Ex.: We will withhold payment until you complete the job satisfactorily. When the job is completed satisfactorily, you will receive payment. It is impossible to move forward without community support.
