ORIE 3300/5300 - Fall 2010 Solutions for Recitation 1 1. When we resolve transportation.mod with the right hand side of the first constraint as 3 instead of 2, AMPL returns: MINOS 5.5: infeasible problem. 1 iterations This is because by changing the first constraint we created an infeasible problem. According to the first three constraints, P + Q + R + S + T + U = 11, but the last two constraints require that P + Q + R + S + T + U = 10. (a) For the extra part, when the nonnegativity is removed AMPL returns: MINOS 5.5: unbounded (or badly scaled) problem. 0 iterations This is because if the nonnegativity requirement is not imposed, and we are minimizing Cost , solutions can be found making cost as low as you like. This is done by satisfying the constraints with a combination of nonnegative and neg- ative solutions, which could make the cost as low as you like depending on the values selected for the variables. 2.
