For instance, if the design does what was promised yet it is unattractive, customers may not associate the design with quality. To exceed customer expectations a decision matrix was formed where each feature was rated on a scale of one to ten. Criteria that were deemed of highest importance are rated from eight to ten and are highlighted green in Table 1. Criteria that were deemed of medium importance are rated from five to seven and are highlighted yellow in Table 1. Criteria that were deemed of least importance are rated from one to four and are highlighted orange in Table 1. Table 1 Criterion Weight Design 1 Design 2 Design 3 Design 4 Size (Portability) 10 Weight 10 Robustness 10 Power Output 9 Strong Anchor 8 Cost to Build 7 Cost to Maintain 7 Ease of Assembly 7 Shape 6 Lifespan 6 Ease to Maintain 6 Strong Housing 6 Range of Use 5 Ease to Deploy 4 Use in Inclement Weather 3 Color 2 The importance of each characteristic has been ranked so that they can be used in a decision matrix. The design team decided that the most important of these characteristics were those that affected the portability of the device as it would have to be carried by hikers, campers, and emergency personnel. Thus the size and weight were given the highest priority. Solutions to these design questions are straight forward. By combining both the turbine and generator into one package all the components can be centralized and can provide a smaller overall size that
