Readings: Chapters 11 through 14 in the textbook, Lectures : Lectures 16 through 22 All material covered in these readings and lectures may be on the exam. This outline points out the MAJOR topics to focus on to help organize your studies. It’s not intended to list every, specific item that will be on the exam, but rather to highlight the major topics to focus on. -Police Discretion - Know the definition of police discretion -Be familiar with examples of police discretion at various levels (patrol, detectives etc.) -Pros and cons of police discretion -Sources of police discretion (how and why they have so much) -Factors that influence police use of discretion -Potential abuses of discretion -Police-Community Relations/Police Legitimacy -Know why police-community relations is such an important topic and why relations between police and urban communities are often strained
