Relationships Between Dominant and Subordinate groups Discrimination- act of treating people differently based on the fact that they belong to some group (Difference between discrimination and prejudice is action, prejudice is a way of thinking Oppression- new laws to deal with certain types of people Marginalization-groups that have less power and view is less important (natives Americans) Alienation- How you see yourself Prejudice- opinion about a person or group that is not based on fact (Philosophy) Stereotypes- fixed mental image about a group based on one attribute/ overly simplistic then apply to everyone Measuring Prejudice Social Distance -Refers to how closely people are willing to interact with members of some category from close friend to co-worker to bar from country
