Lecture 8 (9/3/10) - The Dynamic Earth: Earth in Space [Chapter 5] Origin of the Universe o Big Bang Theory - Cosmological model of the universe that is best supported by all lines of scientific evidence - Universe has expanded from a primordial hot & dense initial condition~13.7 billion (=10 to the 9 th ) years ago - Continues to expand to this day - More than 1.5 billion galaxies have been documented o Age estimates based on rate of expansion and life cycle of stars o New stars created from gas and dust clouds Early Solar System o Our solar system is much younger than the universe o Located in the Milky Way Galaxy o A cloud of gas and dust coalesced in this part of the galaxy o The Planets o Planets revolve around the sun o 8 chemically distinct planets in our Solar System o Four rocky and metallic inner planets Inner most planets very hot (nearest the sun) o Four gaseous outer planets Outer planets very cold (farthest from sun) o Density & composition of planets vary with distance from sun
