Lecture 22 Wind power is very safe and generally environmentally benign Clean, renewable resource Concerns about wind power include o Dispersed resource o Storage & distribution of electric energy produced by wind is a problem o Intermittence of the energy source (erratic behavior of wind patterns) o o Solar Energy Much of the energy we use at present is indirect solar energy o E.g., coal, wind The sun delivers about 80,000 terawatts to the earth We currently only harness about 13 terawatts of this energy The large amount of Solar energy available could potentially solve many of our current energy problems. Direct Use of Solar Energy Currently 4 main approaches are in use: o Passive solar design Building orientation Thermal reservoir to store energy
