Lecture 26 Building Stone Production in TN “Tennessee Pink Marble” Not marble (which is metamorphisized limestone) Hard limestone from the Ordovician age (40 MY) Holston Formation o Retains the fossiliferous texture that would be lost in metamorphism o Polishes to a shiny pinkish-brown o Contains styolites, zig-zag lines cutting across the stone o Formed by dissolution of the limestone due to directed pressure o Dark material in a stylolite is the insoluble residues o E.g. floor of Grand Central Station in NY city Mead’s Quarry Knoxville 181: Ross Marble Company (later Republic Marble Company) began mining  operations at Meads Quarry, Knoxville, TN o Employed 150 workers and cut 25,000-35,000 cubic feet of marble annually o Marble was cut and polished at an adjacent marble mill
