Notes 11/29/10 Municipal solid waste is the trash put out for the garbage collector The majority of municipal waste is produced in developed countries The average American directly generates about 4.5 pounds of trash per day 1.5 pounds of this is recycled, composted, leaving a net of 3 pounds per day Paper is 1/3 of solid waste composition U.S. Municipal Solid Waste Composition Figure 18-3 Municipal Waste Disposal Strategies In the twentieth century, humans have dealt with solid waste in two basic ways: o Burning the waste, which essentially converts it into gas & injects most of it into the atmosphere o Storing the waste in dumps, impoundments, and more recently, sanitary landfills Incineration High temperature incineration (up to 3000 degrees F) can be very effective for disposing Incineration is generally the most costly form of waste disposal Fig 18.04 and 18.05 Problems with Incineration
