POSTFORMAL OPERATIONS: 1970s general criticism of Piagetian theory: focus on logic and one correct answer noted in adulthood a shift away from hypothetical reasoning toward more pragmatic reasoning Piaget’s response: adolescents place excessive faith in abstract systems, preferring a logical, internally consistent even if inaccurate perspective over one that is vague, contradictory, and adapted to a particular circumstances i.e., better to have one rule for everyone and everything than to have shades of gray, exceptions, rely on context Limitation of formal reasoning: Too much focus on use of logic in problem-solving Too mch focus on abstract and hypthetical reasoning and not enough on pragmatic qualities of “real life”-activity Doesn’t allow for the relative nature of knowledge,context,situational issues Place more emphasis on problem-solving rather than problem finging Characteristics of post formal reasoning: Adopts a contextual approach to problem solving sometimes logic doesn’t cut it Allows for an understanding of the relative,nonabsolute nature of knowledge Contradiction ar a basic aspect of reality/ life Capable of dialectic reasoining Thinking is domain specific in nature Perry: Ways in which a person percieves his world Forms of seeing,knowing,and caring
