Fahrenheit 451 Vocabulary Intellectual Freedom: It refers to the Intellectual Freedom Movement, in which one has the right to possess one’s own ideas. It’s also the right to use your ideas in conjunction with your personal property. It is basically the right of all humanity to take part in the use of expressions, inventions, and ideas. Taboos: A taboo is a strong social prohibition or ban. It relates to any human activities or social customs that are declared forbidden, and breaking of the taboo is considered objectionable. Taboos often refer to religion, but also can be prohibited by law. Catholic Index: It is the index of all the catholic peoples in alphabetical order. Legion of Decency: An organization dedicated to identifying and fighting against inappropriate content in motion pictures. Basically, its goal is to censor movies. It was established by Roman Catholic bishops, and other clerics, and is still running to this day. Moral Majority: It refers to the concept that there are often subgroups of people within nations. It usually refers to religious groups, such as Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, or Judaists. It also refers to a political movement in the U.S. which pursued an agenda of religiously-oriented political lobbying. Anti-Defamation Leagues: An organization that was founded in the U.S to stop discrimination. Its purpose was to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end to unjust and unfair discrimination against any specific body of citizens. It was mainly created to stop the defamation of Jewish peoples. Phoenix- It is a legendary bird that lived for 500 years. It burned itself to ashes on a pyre. It rose alive from the ashes to live another period after its death. Totalitarian- Related to centralized control by an autocratic leader or hierarchy. Related to a political regime based on subordination of the individual to the state and strict control of all aspects of the life and productive capacity of the nation especially by coercive measures.(censorship and terrorism) Something that is completely regulated by the state especially as an aid to national mobilization in an emergency. Mass culture- It is the culture that is widely disseminated via the mass media. The content
