Chapter 1: Studying Life I. Biology – the study of life a. Cells a. Unicellular – one cell for all functions b. Multicellular – many cells with specialized functions c. Cell Theory (Schleiden and Schwann) i. Cells are basic unit of life ii. All cells come from preexisting cells (no spontaneous generation) iii. Complete genetic material is passed in cell division iv. Cells are distinct and building blocks simultaneously v. Most chemical reactions occur in cells vi. All cells are similar in chemical composition III. Evolution by Natural Selection a. Species – group of similar organisms that can successfully reproduce b. Natural Selection – survival of the fittest and best equipped i. Adaptation – those able to change with environment’s changes will survive. IV.Genetics
