Lecture 24 Rotating Machines Rotating machines are magnetic circuits with rotating devices. A rotating machine can operate in both motoring and generating mode. The following figure shows the main parts of a machine. The stator consists in an iron core usually built with sheets of metal electrically insulated stacked one on top of the other. Inside the iron core there is a cylindrical space where a rotor is placed. Between the rotor and the stator there is an air gap. The rotor is free to rotate, supported on bearings at both ends. The stator has some slots where windings are located. The two ends of the winding can be connected to a source in order to have current flowing through it. There can be also several turns in the same slot.
