Darkness, melatonin may stall breast and prostate cancers Science News January, 2009 To stay healthy, the body needs its zzz’s (sleep). But independent of sleep, human health also appears to require plenty of darkness especially at night . Or so suggests a pair of new cancer studies. One found that among postmenopausal women, the lower the overnight production of melatonin — a brain hormone secreted at night, especially during darkness — the higher the incidence of breast cancer . The second study correlated elevated prostate cancer incidence around the world with places that have the brightest signatures of light in satellite imagery.

Trends seen in both studies support animal research indicating that natural night-time peaks in blood concentrations of melatonin , which tend to occur during sleep, depress the growth of the hormonally sensitive cancers . Light will depress the body’s natural secretion of that hormone, whether someone is awake or asleep.

FATS (Lipids) We won’t spend a lot of time on these, but they’re very important to life. One of four major macromolecules. What are the other three? I. Why are fats (lipids) important? 1. ** 2. Synthesis of sex hormones 3. Nature’s ―waterproofing‖ material II. Chemical structure of fats? Three major parts:

A. Chain (backbone) of C atoms III. Characteristics of fats: A. Oily or greasy to touch B. Dissolve in water? ** major role in nature. Why?? (keeps water in and/or out ) -- serve as insulation C = O OH C. H atoms attached to Cs B. Carboxyl group at one end

2. ** Also used in cellular membranes to keep ―stuff‖ in or out of cells. How does this work??? 1. Two insulation examples:

We’ll see how in just a minute. But, first…. . IV. Kinds (or categories) of fats – there are four A. Triglycerides -- 3 fatty acids hooked to a molecule of glycerol (an alcohol) -- ** 90% of all body fat -- these oils ―waterproof‖ and insulate birds and animals

Obesity Gaining on Tobacco as Top Killer By Rosie Mestel NY Times Staff Writer March 10, 2004 Poor diet and physical inactivity are closing in on tobacco use as the leading preventable causes of death in the U.S., primarily because of a dramatic rise in obesity, according to a new scientific report. The analysis, published today in the Journal of the American Medical Assn., reported that deaths caused by poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles rose by 33 % between 1990 and 2000 to an estimated 400,000. Deaths related to smoking or exposure to tobacco came to 435,000. Their share of total U.S. deaths have dropped from 19% to 18.1% since 1990.
