Production of 1,3 Propanediol Project goal: The goal of this project is to develop and cost a microbial process for the production of 50,000 metric tons per year of 1,3 propanediol from glucose. The process should be similar to that developed by DuPont and Tate & Lyle. Main Objectives: Review the background to 1,3 propanediol production from renewable resources. Design a production process for 1,3 propanediol production from corn- derived glucose. Provide o Process flow diagrams o Mass and energy balances Perform economic analysis of the manufacturing process to determine the manufacturing cost per pound of 1,3 propanediol . This should include charges for waste treatment, and credits for sale of any by-products. Background: 1,3-Propanediol is the organic compound with the formula CH 2 (CH 2 OH) 2 . This three-carbon diol is a colorless viscous liquid that is miscible with water. It is mainly used as a building block in the production of polymers such as poly- trimethylene terephthalate. 1,3-Propanediol can be formulated into a variety of industrial products including
