Sterilization in Autoclave You are autoclaving some fermentation media prior to use. The autoclave reaches a maximum temperature of 121˚C and maintains that temperature for 20 minutes. The vessel contains 10 liters of medium with 10 5 spores / liter. At 121˚C the k d = 1 min -1 and E a = 376 kJ/mol. a) What is the probability that the medium is sterile following autoclaving? State any major assumptions that you make. b) If the autoclave malfunctions and only reaches a maximum temperature of 119.5˚C, what is the probability that the medium is sterile? Question 2. Bioreactor Design Scientists propose to use baculovirus (a virus which attacks only insect larvae) as an environmentally safe alternative to chemical insecticides for crop protection. The virus can be produced by infecting insect cells grown in culture. Insect cells are similar in size and appearance to mammalian cells and have been grown successfully in roller bottles, but cell culturists warn that insect cells are damaged by sparging. Your team is assigned to find a way to scale up production, and you decide to try to apply the same 500 L
