EM 306 – Statics TEST 2 Fall 2008 - Landis Name ___________________________________ EID ___________________________________ Unique Number ___________________________ Instructions: Correctly drawn and labeled free body diagrams are required for all problems (unless you use the differential equation method for the beam problem). Show all of your work. Place a box around your final answers and include units. Problem 1. Determine the forces carried by members AB , AI , BC , BI, BJ , IJ, and JC . Indicate whether each of these members is in tension or compression with a (t) or (c) respectively. (20 points) Problem 2. Determine the internal shear force and bending moment distributions V(x) and M(x) for the compound beam. Each beam has length L /2 and they are joined together by a frictionless pin. If the x -coordinate has its origin at the simple support the equation for the distributed load is q ( x ) = q 0 x / L . (20 points)
