DRUNK DRIVING IN COLLEGE2Drunk Driving in CollegeDriving while intoxicated has been an ongoing issue for numerous years now. It is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Approximately 16,00 drivers, passengers, and/orpedestrians are killed in these horrific car crashes yearly. These accidents happen predominantly amongst college students. The growing awareness of alcohol hazards, however, has not made people more cautious of their drinking habits, particularly these young adults. The negligence of a lot colleges to take precautions against intoxicated driving has not been stressed enough on the students. According to a study done by Monk Taylor and Mason (2010), young adults presently have the highest prevalence of alcohol consumption than any other age group. They also drink more heavily, experience more negative repercussions, and engage in more harmful activities. Alcohol consumption rates remain highest from late teen years to the late twenties, which is important because these years are particularly known as college years. As drunk driving continues on, the college community should take more initiative to interfere with this conflict to help reduce the problem and continue research on possible solutions to this issue. On personal terms, drivers who took action while intoxicated have affected my life in a way. A family friend of mine was struck at his school all while standing on sidewalk a few years back. To this day, he is paralyzed from the waist down. The driver of the car happened to be a recent graduate of college. My friend had his whole life ahead of him, with plans of being a
