Wendy Candler 10/07/07 4 th AP Literature Vocabulary 2 1) Connotation – What a word suggests beyond its basic dictionary definition; a word’s overtones of meaning 2) Denotation – The basic dictionary definition of a word 3) Apostrophe – A figure of speech in which someone absent dead or something nonhuman is addressed as if it were alive and present and could reply 4) Iambic pentameter – A 5 foot meter consisting of one unaccented syllable followed by one accented syllable 5) Stanza – A group of lines whose metrical pattern (and usually its rhyme scheme as well) is repeated throughout the poem 6) Villanelle – A nineteen-line fixed form poem divided into three 5-line stanzas (tercets) rhymed aba and a 4-line concluding quatrain rhymed
