Section 1: The 1990’s and the New Millennium -The Democrats gained control of the White House by moving their party’s platform toward the political center. Clinton Wins the Presidency *William Jefferson Clinton - Governor of Arkansas captured the White House by vowing to strengthen the nations weak economy and to lead the Democratic Party in a more moderate direction. *H. Ross Perot - TX billionaire targeted the soaring federal budget deficit as the nation’s number one problem. -Clinton demonstrated his willingness to pursue both liberal and conservative policies on healthcare, the budget deficit, crime, and welfare. *Hillary Rodham Clinton - a skilled lawyer and child-welfare advocate was the First Lady. -President Clinton and Congress agreed in 1997 on legislation to balance the federal budget by the year 2002. -A year later, for the first time in nearly 30 years, the federal budget had a surplus. -Clinton and the congressional Republicans cooperated to reform the welfare system. -In 1996, a bill was proposed to place limits on how long people could receive benefits. -April 1999, Columbine High School , CO- 2 students killed 12 and wounded 23 classmates and a teacher, then shot themselves. Copycat crimes began to occur all over the US. -1993-Terrorists had exploded bombs in the World Trade Center in NYC . -April 1995, a nine-story federal office building in Oklahoma City was bombed, killing 168 children, women, and men. -September 11, 2001 - 4 planes were hijacked, 2 of them hit the World Trade Center in NYC. Another plane tore into the Pentagon building and the heroic passengers of the flight brought down the fourth plane, near Pittsburgh, PA. -Over 3,000 people were killed as a result.
