Though the main character in “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” is not alive, he still is the basis of much change in the story. When he is first found by the children of the village, all of the villagers are in awe. They are stunned by his massive size and later by his beauty. The drowned man is a dynamic character despite being dead. However, he does not undergo his dramatic change himself; the secondary characters do it for him. It is done so by both physically and through his perceived characteristics. Upon seeing him for the first time after being cleaned, the women of the small village name him “Esteban”. They cherish him and are able to sympathize with him by generalizing that he must have had a hard life due to his massive size. Later they even begin to fantasize about him and how much of a powerful, wonderful man he mustve been. Esteban also goes through a dramatic physical change. At first he is covered with all the elements of the sea and can barely be noticed as human. Once cleaned his beauty is discovered. The women hurry to make him proper clothes and adorn him. The people of the village takes good care of their drowned man and gives him what they think of as a proper burial....
