While looking over the sample student paper several mistakes stood out to me. Some of the “smaller” and “easier” to fix mistakes were the use of contractions, spelling errors, grammar errors, and run-on sentences. Even though these mistakes are easy to fix they could cause confusion to the reader and make reading the paper tedious. A paper that is tedious to read may not hold the readers attention and the reader may become board with reading it. Contractions are informal and should never be used in academic writing. Spelling and grammar errors could lead to confusion regarding what the author is saying. The reader may also misunderstand the message the author is trying to convey. The problem with run-on sentences is that even though they seem small they can become a big distraction to the reader. Fixing “small” problems such as those listed above are fairly easy to fix but can dramatically change the way a paper is read and the effectiveness of the paper overall.
