Professor Ismail Organizational Behavior and Business Ethics - MGT 502 (R) 22 October 2009 Sunbeam Corporation: “Chainsaw Al” and Greed Business ethics are increasingly becoming important in business environment, especially when the world has seen some financial scandals derived from unethical activities, most prominently such as Enron’s bankruptcy and most recently the subprime mortgage crisis. Basically, business ethics relate to code of conducts that companies employ in their business. However, the boundary between the rightdoings and wrongdoings in business is fragile because of conflict of interest between employees and the board of management, company and its competitors, company and community/government, and other personal interests. Therefore, the best way to avoid unethical business activities which drag companies down is to learn from other mistakes. In this paper, we examine Sunbeam Corporation and its unethical business activities. Sunbeam business’s line – situation before Dunlap was hire – situation after Dunlap was hire – current situation The tragedy of Sunbeam Corporation, which push the company to face Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and eventually disappear as a company, started when Al Dunlap was hired and executed his greedy strategies that causes unethical issues relating to the company’s employees, customers and shareholders.
