AIR POLLUTION Air Pollution= human-caused releases of damaging materials into the air -Has both health and environmental effects -Damage due to air pollution is more difficult to prove than water pollution -Air pollution causes fallout and rainout of materials (these cause terrestrial and aquatic damage) Kinds of Air Pollution: -Primary Pollutant: Directly released in hazardous form -Direct Emissions: (through tailpipe or smokestack) -Secondary Pollutant: Modified to hazardous form (for example, transformed in the presence of sunlight to be hazardous. This is because suCnlight causes photochemical oxidants) -Fugitive Emissions: (through dust, cigarette smoke, leaks) Criteria pollutants: -Defined in Clean Air Act of 1970 -Sulfur Compounds- H250 from coal, oil -Nitrogen Compounds- NOx from transport, power generation -Carbon Compounds- Fossil Fuels -Metals and Halogens- Traces in fuels, industry -Particulates- many types and sources -Volatile Organics- Ch4 and synthesis -Photochemical Oxidants- Ozone Causes of Air Pollution: -lead-main cauase of acid rain -nitrogen-from power plants -VOC- solvents -Particulate material- construction, agriculture -CO2- produce in transportation
