Sara Newell MMC1702 Reaction Paper 1 February 25, 2010 Singer-Songwriters: A New Look at Rock and Roll Coming into this course, I must admit that I had preconceived notions about what a typical rock song sounded like: loud, energetic streams of the electric guitar accompanied by strong drum beats and harsh vocals; however, after only a few short weeks, I was introduced to the unlimited possibilities of rock and roll and the myriad of sounds categorized in this genre. I can pinpoint the moment when the light-switch clicked on, when I realized the extensive reach of rock music; it was the lecture on singer-songwriters. Never before had I categorized songs like, “You’re So Vain,” by Carly Simon, or Carole King’s, Tapestry , album as rock and roll. But then again, why hadn’t I? A singer- songwriter is simply someone who performs the music that they personally write. Considering almost every rock-era act did this, including such heavy metal bands as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, what exactly is the difference between the two? When I think
