BF 3 B is electron deficient, with no lone pairs and three single bonds. The molecule is trigonal planar, and B is using sp 2 hybrid orbitals to bond to the three fluorine atoms. b. H 2 O O has two lone pairs, and the molecule has a bent structure. It is using sp 3 hybrid orbitals. c. ClO 3 ¯ Cl has one lone pair, with single bonds to each oxygen atom. The molecular structure is trigonal pyramid (like NH 3 ), and sp3 hybrids are used for bonding. 2. Consider the molecule below.
