Workshop on Lewis Structures and Formal Charge Formal charge is a way to evaluate the relative merits of differing Lewis structures for molecules for which more than one Lewis structure can be constructed. Briefly, the formal charge is the difference between the number of electrons on the free atom and the number of electrons assigned to the atom in the Lewis structure of a molecule. The number of electrons ‘belonging’ to an atom in a molecule can be determined by counting 1 electron for each bond to the atom, and then adding to that the number of non-bonding electrons. The sum of the formal charges for all atoms in a molecule MUST equal the net charge on the molecule. If it doesn’t, you have made an error. The lower the formal charges are in a Lewis structure, the more important that Lewis structure is likely to be. To see if you understand the process, draw the Lewis structure for carbon monoxide. There should be a triple bond between the carbon and the oxygen atoms, and each atom
