Caught in the subprime mortgage disaster, tens of thousands of New Yorkers are facing the threat of foreclosure and the loss of their homes. Since September, the Spitzer administration's Keep the Dream program has extended help to some of them. By some, we mean a grand, remarkable total of two. No kidding. Over the past four months, Keep the Dream has attracted all of four applicants, and only a pair of homeowners have successfully closed on lower-cost mortgages. New York must do better. Gov. Spitzer needs to quickly retool Keep the Dream so it reaches many more worthy homeowners. For starters, his housing team must become far more aggressive in marketing the program's availability through lenders and local housing groups.
