Unformatted text preview: 2/6/11 Securities Regulations Prof. Julie Shubin Bule-402-001-F10 Commercial Law Julie Shubin 2010 2/6/11 Cats of the day 2/6/11 Congress passed the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 to ensure that the country never suffers through another economic crisis as catastrophic as the Great Depression. It is in no small part owing to these laws that the United States has enjoyed so many years of economic 2/6/11 SECs comment on investing: The world of investing is fascinating and complex, and it can be very fruitful. But unlike the banking world, where deposits are guaranteed by the federal government, stocks, bonds and other securities can lose value. There are no guarantees. That's why investing is not a spectator sport. By far the best way 2/6/11 Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Created in 1934 to regulate the securities industry: Rules to fill in gaps left by state securities statutes. Releases informal pronouncements on current issues, particularly proposed changes in the rules. Major pieces of legislation, such as the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Investment Company Act of 1940, 2/6/11 What is a Security?
