Leadership Lecture Notes Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals. Measure leadership effectiveness by the degree to which the leader’s actions result in: Achievement of organizational goals The continued commitment of followers The development of a relationship of mutual trust and respect between leader and followers Trait Approach Differentiate leaders from non-leaders by focusing on personal qualities and characteristics Big 5 personality traits: o Most strongly related to leadership: Extraversion o Also related to leadership: Openness, Conscientiousness o Better at predicting leader emergence than leader effectiveness Another trait of interest: Emotional Intelligence Behavioral Styles Approach Research the behaviors of specific leaders Provides the basis of design for training programs The Leadership Grip o Based on Ohio State Model and Michigan studies o Two Types of Behaviors: Concern for production
