Emotions and Moods Affect is a generic term that covers a broad range of feelings that people experience. It’s an umbrella concept that encompasses both emotions and moods Emotions are intense feelings that are directed at something or someone. Usually very brief, accompanied by a distinct facial expression and are action oriented in nature. Moods are feelings that tend to be less intense than emotions and that often (though not always) lack a contextual stimulus. Last longer than emotions, generally not indicated by facial expressions, and cognitive in nature. The Basic Emotions anger, contempt, enthusiasm, envy, fear, frustration, disappointment, embarrassment, disgust, happiness, hate, hope, jealousy, joy, love, pride, surprise, and sadness. The Basic Moods Positive or negative. o Positive Affect is a mood dimension consisting of positive emotions such as excitement, self-assurance and cheerfulness at the high end and boredom, sluggishness, and tiredness at the lower end. o
