Lesson 6 Notes: Database and Information Management Database: alternative definitions A collection of data elements/facts systematically organized to provide visibility and information in an orderly fashion A collection of files and relationships among records and data elements in those files An organization of data in some logical, orderly way A record keeping system Data Processing Transactions Batch processing: update mast files on a daily, weekly, basis not as the transaction occurs Online processing= process (enter) transaction as it occurs Real-time system= The transaction entered online, controls the physical system (special form of online system) Hierarchical Database Structure Hierarchical= each record on one level can be related to multiple records on the next lower level; a tree like structure Parent-Child Relationship analogy record is the parent, subsiding record is the child Problem is it is explicit ** see notes File organization terms Field (data element)= a word, a group of words, a number Record= a group of related fields File= a group of records of the same type Database= a group of related files Relational Database Structure (most popular database structure)
