Lesson 5 Notes: Information Technology Infrastructure Hardware Fundamentals Categories of Computers: o Microcomputer (personal computer) o Workstation (large memory, larger desktop, used by programmers) o Minicomputer o Mainframe Computer o Super Computer (largest computer, large calculations, used by government and universities for research) Computer memory: o Volatile: Random access memory (DRAM) o Non-volatile: Read-Only memory (PROM EPROM) o Flash Memory= small, easily reprogrammed, most useful, used in digital camera and cell phones o Cache memory= a small amount of data (less than in RAM chips) that can be quickly accessed by the CPU- raise overall performance Moore’s Law- the number of transistors on a CPU doubles every 18 months Secondary Storage Technology o Magnetic Tape o Magnetic Disk= Hard, Floppy o Optical disks: CDROM, CD-R, DVD o New Storage Alternatives: Storage area networks, storage service providers Processing o Batch Processing- transactions many wait a month and all be process
