Liberation Theology is popular in South America In Europe, religion is a cultural identity that you are born into Pentecostal is the fastest growing religious movement Religion falls under the category of “worldview” along with nationalism, communism and etc. Even though they don’t have a god, they attempt to answer the big questions. Theorists Rudolf Otto Mysterium Tremendum Absolute Fear and Horror Otto believes that you have to die in deep into a religion to study it, experience is necessary William James Religion’s “ineffability” cannot be put into words “Noetic” Otto is more focused on the divine and James is more focused on the experience of the divine Durkheim- Studies the Social Aspect of Religion What society does and how it defines the religion The Sacred and the Profane The sacred is the tradition, text, church building The profane is taboo, what is against the religion Max Weber Author of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism
