Osmosis Lab: Chicken Egg Cell Model Name _______________ Partner: ___________________ Introduction: This lab activity will use a chicken egg as a cell model. We will expose the chicken egg to a hypertonic environment to make it shrink, and a hypotonic environment to make it swell. The shrinking and swelling will be caused by osmosis. Day 1 1. Get a raw chicken egg and determine its mass. Initial mass: ______ grams 2. Place the egg and carefully place it in a beaker 3. Add enough vinegar to cover the egg. (Note that the egg will probably float) 4. Let the egg soak for 2 minutes and observe what happens Observations: 5. Label your beaker and place it with the rest of the classes beakers. Day 2 1. Observe and record any changes in your egg. Observations: 2. Carefully lift the egg out of the beaker and rinse it off under running water. Carefully rub and shell remnants off with your fingers. 3. Dry the egg off carefully with a paper towel and measure its mass. Mass after vinegar treatment: _______ grams
