Brittney Brown Alfred Carson English 2110 April 22, 2010 Character Essay In The Metamorphosis, Gregor is actually transformed into a beetle, while the speaker in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a metaphorical bug pinned against the wall. These two characters have several similar and distinct personality traits that ultimately influence the type of lifestyle they chose to live. In both novels, the characters do not pursue lives that are motivated by their own self interests. Gregor, in The Metamorphosis, lives his life for the pleasure of his family. He is a traveling salesman who hates his job. The pressure of debt that his father owes his boss forces him to acquire the title of sole breadwinner for the family. The speaker in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a moderate day example of an insecure man that never exploits challenges outside of his comfort zone. He watches daily as his life passes him by. He exerts no sense of moral control over his life, resulting in everyday feeling like the same day. Even as the balding
